Summer inflation increased 8.61% in the last 12 months, according to IBRE
Summer inflation - the average of prices of the main products and services most used in the season - increased 8.61% this year, higher than the accumulated inflation in the same period from 2012 to 2013. That's what the Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV/IBRE) indicates, based on data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI-BR), which is at 5.61%.
This time, according to the institute, the villains of inflation were drinks, pulled by the 67.75% increase of yerba mate, 13.83% of fruit juices, 12.60% of soft drinks/mineral water and 10.92% of beers and draft beer - all consumed out of home.
On the other hand, fruit pulp, beers, soft drinks/mineral water and soy beverages purchased in the supermarket suffered increases of 16.16%, 11.69%, 9% and 6.82%, respectively. Sun screen, in turn, became 8.48% more expensive from February 2013 to January 2014.
However, for IBRE's economist, André Braz, summer is not the only thing to blame for the increase in prices. There is a tax burden that justifies some of these price increases and a demand for those products and services that justifies the rest, says Braz, who conducted the survey.
Also according to IBRE, in the services category, gyms have suffered a 6.38% change in the last 12 months. Hotels, air tickets and recreation clubs, 8%, 6.75% and 5.71%, respectively. Back to the list of products, the price of blenders recorded an increase of 7.10%; refrigerators and freezers, 7.10%; air conditioning, 3.77%, and fans and air circulators, 2.27%.
