Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Center for Judicial Innovation, Administration and Research (CIAPJ), in partnership with the Superior Court of Appeals and the Institute for Reform of State-Company Relations (IREE), is holding a seminar called “Relevant Arguments in Special Appeals.” The event is being coordinated by Justice Luis Felipe Salomão of the Superior Court of Appeals, who is a professor at FGV, the head of internal affairs at the National Justice Council and the coordinator of CIAPJ, together with lawyers Georges Abboud and Rodrigo Salomão.

The in-person event will take place on September 28, at 9:30 am, in the Superior Court of Appeals’ auditorium in the Asa Sul district of Brasília (address: “Quadra 6, Lote 1, Trecho 3”). It will discuss the recent passing of Constitutional Amendment 125 of 2022, which limited the number of special appeals that may be submitted to the Superior Court of Appeals.

The first talk will be about the Superior Court of Appeals’ present situation and the importance of Constitutional Amendment 125 in this context. There will then be a panel discussion about the functions of higher courts, precedents and the right to special appeals. The second panel discussion will look at hypotheses related to presumption and need for new regulations. Finally, the results of a study carried out by CIAPJ will be presented.

The participants will include Superior Court of Appeals justices Mauro Luiz Campbell Marques, Paulo de Tarso Vieira Sanseverino, Benedito Gonçalves, Antônio Saldanha Palheiro and Regina Helena Costa; Justice Maria Cristina Peduzzi of the Superior Labor Court; Judge Caroline Tauk of the Regional Federal Court of the 2nd Region, who is CIAPJ’s academic coordinator; the Federal Supreme Court’s precedent management secretary, Marcelo Ornellas Marchiori; and Judge Humberto Dalla of the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Appeals.
