The weight of private schools in the 2014 budget should increase. That is what the professor of FGV?s São Paulo School of Economics (FGV/EESP), Samy Dana, stated in his column Caro Dinheiro (Dear Money), in the newspaper ?Folha de São Paulo?. According to the economist, the forecast is that tuition adjustment reaches 12% - or nearly double the 6.5% cumulative inflation over the period of 12 months, according to the Central Bank's calculation.Samy recalls that in his book How to go from borrower to investor - A Guide to Personal Finances, co-written with Fabio Sousa, the key tips for parents are: search for good schools that are not necessarily the most expensive ones, prioritize those closest to home, cut transportation costs and carefully analyze extra courses offered at the school. Also according to the professor, it is important that parents write down how much they will spend on uniforms, school supplies and food, to get an exact picture of whether the tuition fits their budget. He also recommends offering services to the school to reduce tuitions. A father who is a photographer, for example, can make a deal to record school's events on the weekend, through a good discount on tuition, he advises. The solution is to question, individually or in groups (with other parents), the increase at the Small Claims Court. Also, Samy Dana highlights on his blog that parents must be aware of abuse and learn about the Brazilian Law 9870 - which regulates school fees.
