Unprecedented documentary looks at impact of AI on elections
Documentary provides a crucial record of one of the most significant election years in history, highlighting the technological and political transformations that are reshaping democracies
At a decisive moment for the future of global democracies, “Artificial Democracies,” a documentary produced by the FGV School of Communication, Media and Information (FGV ECMI), looks at how the evolution of generative artificial intelligence is shaping the electoral situation in 2024. Executive produced by Marco Aurelio Ruediger and directed by Leila Sterenberg, the film goes beyond discussions about deepfakes, questioning the role of algorithms, databases and the inequalities accentuated by this emerging technology.
The documentary features exclusive interviews with the president of the Superior Electoral Court, Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha, former Superior Electoral Court president Alexandre de Moraes and U.S. political scientist Ian Bremmer, among other figures. AI experts such as Dora Kaufman and Diogo Cortiz, journalists such as Pedro Doria and Fernando Rodrigues and lawmakers who have been leading the debate on the regulation of AI and fake news also take part, sharing their analysis of the threats and opportunities that AI represents for democracy.
“The documentary presents an unprecedented and urgently needed analysis of the impacts of artificial intelligence on elections, while also raising some profound questions about the future of democracies in an increasingly digitized world,” says Marco Aurelio Ruediger, the dean of FGV ECMI and the documentary’s executive producer.
“Our starting point was the challenges that AI poses for electoral processes, and we reflected deeply on how technological evolution may affect democracy,” says Leila Sterenberg, a journalist and the documentary’s director.
Lasting 40 minutes, “Artificial Democracies” not only features interviews with public officials and experts, but also uses video footage and soundtracks generated by AI, illustrating in practice the potential and risks of this technology.
