Urban Reflections: Seminar discusses creative economy and innovation

On October 30, Fundação Getulio Vargas is holding a seminar called Rio: A Creative City, under the Galileo Galilei Dome in the Planetarium in Gávea. This will be the fifth meeting in FGV’s Urban Reflections series – a project conceived in partnership with the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro. The event will discuss topics related to innovation, the creative industries and urbanism. The meeting, free of charge and open to the public, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The seminar will reflect on the challenges facing today’s cities and exchange knowledge on key issues for metropolises, such as the role of industry, funding challenges, major events, fashion and cuisine.

As in the other seminars in the series, international experiences will be connected with Rio’s circumstances, in order to inspire new solutions and stimulate the sharing of knowledge. The speakers will include the director of the School of Cities at the University of Toronto, Karen Chapple, whose research focuses on inequalities in urban planning and development, particularly in the United States and Latin America.

Chapple (who is also the founder of the Urban Displacement Project, a significant initiative that explores patterns of residential and commercial displacement and solutions to this issue) will address subjects related to economic development and the recovery of central areas. Before focusing on her academic career, she worked for a decade on economic development and transportation planning teams in New York and San Francisco.

The seminar will also feature professors, researchers, public and private sector leaders and representatives of institutions involved in major projects in the city of Rio de Janeiro, such as BNDES, Senac, Firjan and Finep. Over the course of the day, there will be three panel discussions on the following topics: economic development and innovation; innovation and governance; and culture and the economy.

Urban Reflections series

From April to November, the Urban Reflections series, organized by FGV Knowledge with the support of the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro, is holding meetings with urban planners, public managers, academics, students and other stakeholders to discuss some of the main challenges facing today’s cities, always taking the issues and demands of the city of Rio de Janeiro as a starting point.
