Webinar addresses regulation and governance models for “just transition” in mining sector

On September 23, FGV Europe will hold the second webinar in the “Toward a Just Transition: An Opportunity for Minas Gerais” series. The meeting will look at topics related to regulation and governance models for the “just transition” in the Brazilian mining sector. The event will be broadcast live on FGV’s YouTube channel, starting at 10:30 am.

During the webinar, relevant European cases will be presented and the Brazilian regulatory aspects of local governance models that will allow planning, management and engagement of local stakeholders will be discussed. Finally, regulatory aspects related to sectors involved in the just transition process will also be discussed, focusing on the mining sector. New solutions for institutional arrangements for these regions will also be explored.

The speakers will be the Brazilian Mining and Energy Ministry’s secretary for geology, mining and mineral transformation, Alexandre Vidigal de Oliveira; the Minas Gerais State Economic Development Secretariat’s mining, energy and logistics superintendent, Marcelo Ladeira Moreira da Costa; researcher and just transition governance specialist at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, Maria Yetano Roche; Anglo American’s corporate affairs director, Ivan de Araújo Simões Filho; Professor Rômulo Sampaio of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School; and FGV Europe Professional Fellow Hannes Schwertfeger. The moderator will be FGV Europe’s project coordinator, Marco Contardi.

The bilateral technical cooperation initiative “Toward a Just Transition: An Opportunity for Minas Gerais” aims to promote sustainable development trajectories in mining regions in the global context of energy transition, innovation and economic diversification. The initiative is led by Fundação Getulio Vargas, FGV Europe and the German Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro. It is supported by the Germany Foreign Ministry and the state government of Minas Gerais.
