Webinar debates impact of housing inequalities in context of pandemic

On September 8, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Center of Politics and Economics of the Public Sector (FGV CEPESP) will hold the fifth and final event in a series of online debates about public policy and the upcoming Brazilian municipal elections. The webinar will address housing inequalities in the pandemic’s context. It will be broadcast live on FGV’s YouTube channel, starting at 5 pm.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated economic and social inequalities. The most vulnerable people have been the hardest hit, in terms of both health and finances, because they have not been able to work from home, they have had no choice but to continue to use public transport, and they live in small, substandard homes, often with limited access to water and sewage services, hindering health and social isolation.

COVID-19 infections and fatalities have been boosted by these poor housing conditions. Unequal cities have caused the pandemic to be unequal, as we have seen in the shantytowns of Sao Paulo, black and Latino ghettos in the United States and among migrants in Europe and Asia. There is an urgent need to reorient efforts at all levels of government to tackle substandard housing conditions and expand the supply of social homes. Measures should also be taken to prevent vulnerable people from being homeless.

In this context, is it politically feasible to prioritize and coordinate investments to make improvements in these areas? What alternatives could future mayors propose to avoid evictions and to protect people who are already living on the streets? Speakers Claudia Acosta (Cepesp) and Natalia Bueno (Emory University and Cepesp) will answer these questions. The event will be led by urbanist Carlos Leite (FAU-Makenzie, PPG-CIS-Uninove and Social Urbanism Center at Insper’s Future City Architecture Lab).
