Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE) and the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper have launched a series of debates with economists and political scientists to analyze Brazil’s situation and identify possible paths the country could follow to get through the current pandemic in a less turbulent way and resume growth. The first webinar in the series, called “The Political Situation and Impacts on the Economy,” will take place on Thursday, July 16, from 10 am to 11:30 am, on FGV’s YouTube channel.

This first meeting will feature two political scientists at FGV EBAPE, Carlos Pereira and Octavio Amorim, FGV IBRE researcher Samuel Pessôa, and journalist Fernando Canzian, who is a special reporter for Folha de S.Paulo.

The Brazilian economy had already been suffering from low growth, of around 1.2% (the average rate in the last two years), following the longest recession in its history. The health crisis caused by COVID-19 postponed any attempt at recovery, further aggravating the country’s situation: Brazil’s economy may shrink between 7% and 12%% this year, given the high degree of uncertainty about the near future.

In this context, the political crises between the president and other branches of government make the outlook even more serious, at a time when conciliation would be the best path forward for the country to face its health and political challenges, as well as inequality, which has become a lot worse because of the pandemic.
