Webinar looks at energy and development in Amazon
Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP) will hold an online debate on energy and development in the Amazon on September 13, at 7 pm, on FGV’s YouTube channel. The event is part of the Amazon Dialogues, a digital platform to discuss topics related to sustainable socioeconomic development in the Brazilian Amazon with the whole of society.
The speakers will be André Clark Juliano, the CEO of Siemens Energy do Brasil; and Tarcísio Estefano Rosa, managing partner of TCE ENERGIA Consultoria e Serviços em Energia. The moderators will be Marcio Holland, the coordinator of FGV EESP’s Finance and Economics Master’s Program; and Daniel Vargas, FGV Agro’s research director.
The electrification of a region is essential to its sustainable development. However, universalizing access to power is a major challenge in Brazil. In the case of the Amazon, the difficulties are greater because of the large distances, low population density, numerous flooded areas, dense jungle, indigenous reserves and major concerns about the social and environmental impacts of medium and large-scale investment projects. At the same time, the region has great investment potential in alternative energy sources. In this context, this event aims to discuss the importance and challenges of energy investments in the Amazon region.
