Work on data science and knowledge organization presented in Italy

Renato Rocha Souza, professor at FGV’s School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp), is giving the lecture “Data Science, Machine Learning, Knowledge Organization and Digital Humanities: some reflections on the fields of knowledge”, at the European University Institute, in Florence, Italy. The presentation features an international seminar that will bring together academics and data science experts, on May 29-31.

In his presentation, the FGV EMAp professor will highlight that data science has been described as an interdisciplinary field of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, structured or otherwise. According to Souza, just as information science revolutionized knowledge organization in the 1960s, this field has emerged to provide theoretical, methodological and practical tools for studying and addressing information needs, and both rely heavily on technological constructions.

The goal of this lecture is to discuss the points of convergence of the two fields and the challenges and opportunities that data-driven science can bring to informational tasks within digital Humanities.
