Inflation retreats in Brazil in last week of July

Released on July 31 by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), the Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S) varied 0.17% – 0.21 percentage point (p.p.) below the last published rate. With this result, the index accumulates a 3.17% increase in the year and 4.22% in the last 12 months.
Seven of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded lower price variation rates compared to the previous period. The Food group was the main contributing factor (-0.21% to -0.61%). Within this expense category, it is important to highlight the behavior of the dairy item, which changed from 6.93% to 4.84%.
The following groups also showed decreased variation rates: Housing (1.34% to 1.08%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.78% to 0.42%), Transport (0.13% to 0.00%), Health and Personal Care (0.31% to 0.27%), Communication (0.32% to 0.24%) and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.06% to 0.05%). In these classes, it is worth highlighting the behavior of the following items: household power bill (6.46% to 5.34%), airfare (17.21% to 4.31%), used car (-0.33% to -0.62%), medications in general (0.23% to 0.18%), monthly pay TV fee (0.13% to -0.19%) and pet food (-0.06% to -0.28%), respectively.
On the other hand, only the Clothing group (-0.91% to -0.64%) recorded a higher price variation rate. The main contributing item in this expense category was clothes, which changed from -1.24% to -1.00%.
