Event discusses contribution of religious teaching to education in Brazil

The history of Catholic education is intertwined with Brazil’s education background. Religious congregations, with their educational and evangelizing practices, have played a leading role in Brazilian education since colonial times. Although they remain faithful to the principle of the integral formation of human beings, these practices accompany social and political transformations. To discuss the subject, FGV’s Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (EPGE) will host the seminar “Religious Missions and Basic Education in Brazil” on August 31, at 9:30 a.m. The event will be held in the auditorium of FGV’s Main Office, in Rio de Janeiro. (Praia de Botafogo, 190. 12th floor. Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro/RJ).

The seminar aims to assess the contributions of Catholic philosophy and education to basic education in Brazil from a historical perspective, besides discussing the main challenges of Catholic educational projects in light of the emerging demands of Brazilian society.

The opening ceremony will include the President of FGV, professor Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, and the President of Associação Nacional de Educação Católica do Brasil (Anec) and Dean of UniLaSalle, Brother Paulo Fossatti (Fratum Scholarum Christianorum – FSC). The panel that will discuss the contributions of Catholic education to teaching in Brazil will feature the Dean of Colégio São Bento, Abbot Dom Filipe da Silva (Order of Saint Benedict – OSB), the President of Associação Antônio Vieira (Asav) and BRA Administrator – Province of the Jesuits in Brazil, Father João Geraldo Kolling (Societas Iesu – SJ), professor Paula Leonardi, from UERJ’s School of Education, and the Dean of EPGE, professor Rubens Penha Cysne.
