Inflation falls in February for households with income between 1 and 2.5 minimum wages

Developed by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), the Consumer Price Index - Class 1 (CPI-C1) varied 0.49% in February, 0.12 percentage point (p.p.) below the rate in January, when the index rose 0.61%. With this result, the index accumulates a 1.10% increase in the year and 4.81% in the last 12 months.

In January, the CPI-BR rose 0.35%. The indicator’s rate for the last 12 months stood at 4.38% – below the CPI-C1.

Four of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a lower price variation rate compared to the previous period: Transport (1.84% to 0.22%), Education, Reading, and Recreation (2.00% to -0.24%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.27% to 0.08%), and Communication (0.01% to -0.05%). The following items stood out in these expense categories: city bus fare (3.87% to 0.71%), formal courses (6.40% to 0.00%), pet food (1.06% to -0.16%), and landline phone and internet packages (0.51% to 0.00%).

On the other hand, the Housing (0.19% to 0.40%), Health and Personal Care (-0.02% to 0.50%), Food (0.84% to 0.97%), and Clothing (-0.56% to -0.04%) groups showed higher variation rates. The main contributing items in these categories were household power bill (0.12% to 1.56%), personal care and hygiene items (-0.54% to 0.99%), vegetables (2.37% to 6.22%) and clothing (-0.65% to 0.06%).
