FGV launches Doctoral program focusing on Law and Development

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo Law School (Direito SP) offers, for the first time, an Academic Doctoral Program, in the Law and Development research line. On June 19, a breakfast will be held to present research lines of the Doctorate, as well as the Academic Master’s Degree. Both selection processes will be accepting registrations until August 2.

The new Doctoral program was structured to meet the growing demand for training of researchers with a capacity to address legal issues and the singularities of an institutional context of a developing country. According to professor Mario Schapiro, coordinator of the program, the approval of the Doctoral program by CAPES marked the completion of a cycle of programs aimed at training researchers who are committed to reflecting and producing research of relevance that respond to contemporary challenges in the country’s development.

To achieve this goal, the Academic Doctoral program of FGV Direito SP will offer training based on three pillars: solid theoretical foundation in Law, interdisciplinarity, and empirical approach. “The area of concentration in Law and Development is acknowledged in several research centers worldwide and is dedicated, above all, to the study of the relations between the legal field and the processes of political, economic and social development," explained Schapiro.

Both the Doctorate and the Academic Master’s Degree are designed for students who wish to participate in an innovative academic experience in Brazil.

Vacancies can be filled by holders of a degree in Law or other related fields, such as Social Sciences, Economics and Administration (in the case of the Master’s Degree) and a Master’s degree (in the case of a Doctorate).
