IPC-C1: Inflation for low-income families drops but remains above IPC-BR

The Consumer Price Index – Low Income (IPC-C1), calculated by the FGV´s Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE), went up 0.11% in August 2019, down 0.32 of a percentage point from 0.43% in July. As a result, the indicator is now up 3.28% in the year to date and up 4.11% in the past 12 months.

In August, six of the eight spending groups that make up the index saw declines in their rates of variation: Food (0.20% to -0.46%), Housing (1.32% to 0.95%), Health and Personal Care (0.28% to 0.01%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.40% to -0.07%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.16% to 0.04%) and Clothing (-0.28% to -0.44%).

In these categories, there were notable results for the following items: Vegetables (0.86% to -9.73%), Residential Electricity Charges (6.42% to 3.10%), Hygiene and Personal Care Items (0.31% to -0.29%), Pet Food (1.98% to -0.43%), Airline Tickets (-2.20% to -5.36%) and Footwear (-0.12% to -0.43%).

On the other hand, Transportation (-0.24% to 0.05%) and Communication (0.04% to 0.68%) recorded increases in their rates of variation. In these groups, there were noteworthy results for the following items: Gasoline (-1.86% to -0.22%) and Residential Phone Charges (0.04% to 1.54%).
