Webinar discusses urban mobility during the pandemic

On Wednesday, April 29, FGV Transportes will hold a free webinar called “The Current and Future Impacts of Covid-19 on Urban Mobility in Brazilian Cities.” The speakers will be Sao Paulo State Transport Secretary Alexandre Baldy and the general secretary of the Latin American Railroad Association, Jean Carlos Pejo. The moderator will be FGV Transportes’ coordinator, Marcus Quintella.
The event will be transmitted on YouTube. According to Quintella, the aim is to discuss urban mobility’s present situation and possible solutions during and after the pandemic, when normal activities resume. He said it will be very hard to avoid public transit crowds, even if many employees continue to work from home. “The way forward will involve education, guidance and hygiene. Even if 30% of employees work from home, mass transportation won’t be able to serve the public at a density of fewer than four people per square meter,” he said.
Quintella said that the event’s speakers will look at Brazil’s situation, including the specific case of Sao Paulo, the country’s biggest metropolis, with around 12 million inhabitants, and its main Covid-19 hotspot. “The webinar will encourage people to rethink transportation at this time. People who need to move around, not least to maintain essential services such as health, water and food deliveries, cannot be neglected. Transportation companies must schedule services in line with passengers’ demand,” he said.
