Academic trip to the Amazon provides food for thought on global sustainability
The experience in the Amazon region was promoted by FGV EBAPE and included the participation of students from the Master in Management (MiM) and the IBEA International Undergraduate Program.

Master in Management (MiM) students from the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (FGV EBAPE) and the IBEA International Undergraduate Program took part in a unique immersive experience in the Amazon, in Belém do Pará. The Amazon Immersion Experience integrated academic learning, cultural experiences and sustainable management practices, connecting the students to one of the richest and most challenging ecosystems on the planet.
During the immersion, the students explored initiatives that reconcile environmental preservation and economic development, interacting with leaders, local communities and leading sustainability organizations.
Professor Fabrício Stocker, the academic head of the initiative, highlighted the impact of the experience: “It was a privilege to witness how transformative this experience was for our international students. Projects like this are essential for providing a deeper understanding of the complexities of Brazil, allowing our students to learn from local businesses and communities and see how innovative solutions can tackle major global challenges.”
Student reflections
The experience generated important reflections among the students. For Charlotte Budeus and Lejna Pandzic, from the IBEA program, the immersion broadened their view of sustainability:
- Logistical Challenges: “Crossing the Amazon by boat made us understand the difficulties of riverside communities in accessing markets. Effective governance is key to improving accessibility.”
- Deforestation: “We discovered that many deforestation practices are linked to illegal activities. Local communities, contrary to popular belief, seek to preserve the environment.”
- Social sustainability: “In the Amazon, the interdependence between communities makes social sustainability an essential pillar.”
The importance of experience
This program goes beyond the classroom, offering international students the opportunity to learn from the unique realities of Brazil. It challenges them to see how local businesses and communities overcome significant obstacles while pursuing sustainability. By connecting with the biodiversity, culture and people of the Amazon, students gain critical perspectives on how to tackle global sustainability problems with innovative and inclusive approaches. Charlotte and Lejna add: “This trip enriched us personally and broadened our understanding of sustainable business practices in many ways.”
Highlights of the immersion
- Visit to Natura: Learning about their sustainable business model.
- Exploring the islands of Combu and Marajó: Sustainable tourism and local culture.
- Meetings at SEMAS: Dialogues on the green economy with public managers.
- Cultural events: Direct contact with the diversity of the Amazon.
Combining theory and practice, the Amazon Immersion Experience reaffirms FGV EBAPE's commitment to training global leaders prepared to face current challenges, promoting positive impact and sustainable development.
