Student João Pedro Maier from Fundação Getulio Vargas's School of Public Policy and Government (FGV EPPGE) was part of the winning team of the MIT Hacking Medicine Brazil and InterSystems Challenge: Best Use of GenAI in Health awards. The group, which also included Amós Nascimento and Felipe Lima Alcântara (electrical engineers from UnB), Camille Ribeiro (doctor from Santa Casa de São Paulo), Fellipe Wander Godoy, and Sophia Nickerson (biomedical engineers from Albert Einstein), developed LiverScan — a physical device that accurately measures the percentage of fat in the liver, allowing for early diagnosis and monitoring of liver diseases. 

“The MIT Hacking Medicine has already raised over $2.5 billion in 30 countries, and this is the first time it has come to Brazil. Having one of our undergraduate students winning 1st place while competing with scientists and already trained professionals is a huge pride for FGV EPPGE in Brasília!” said Edson Kondo, Director of FGV EPPGE. 

The system uses artificial intelligence to process data and connect patients and doctors, facilitating monitoring and adherence to treatment. As recognition, the students will receive mentorship from specialists at Harvard University and MIT Sloan School of Management, as well as the opportunity for incubation in the InterSystems Caelestinus 2026 program.
