The School of Applied Mathematics at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EMAp) will hold, from May 5 to 7 at the FGV Cultural Center, the 1st edition of the Carioca Workshop on Optimization and Applications - CariOPT 2025. The event will provide a unique opportunity for professionals and academics to gather and discuss the latest innovations and applications in the field of optimization. This is a fundamental area of applied mathematics and operational research, focusing on seeking the best solution within a set of viable options. In the context of machine learning, optimization techniques are essential for training algorithms, allowing models to learn from data while minimizing loss functions and improving predictive accuracy.

In industry, optimization is crucial for improving operational processes, reducing costs, and enhancing product quality, being indispensable for decision-making in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, energy economics, and finance.

The workshop will cover optimization for machine learning, including topics such as differential privacy, tensor decomposition, and their applications. Speakers from Meta AI and Google Research will also participate. The workshop will include topics such as optimization in finance, nonlinear programming, variational analysis, and optimization on manifolds and their applications. A mini-course will also be offered, providing an enriching experience for all participants.

The best poster, chosen by participant voting, will be awarded a certificate and a special prize. There will also be a tribute to Professor Alfredo Iusem, recognizing his remarkable contributions to the field of optimization in celebration of his 75th birthday.

The organizing and scientific committees consist of the following researchers: Alfredo Iusem, Bernardo Costa, Philip Thompson, Diego Mesquita, and Vincent Guigues from FGV EMAp; Di Liu, Benar Fux Svaiter, and Roberto I. Oliveira from IMPA; Alejandro Jofré from UCh (Chile); and João Pereira from UGA (USA).

The event is sponsored by FGV EMAp, CAPES, and FAPERJ. Learn more about CariOPT 2025 on the website by clicking here.
