In celebration of Mathematician’s Day, celebrated on October 26, Fundação Getulio Vargas highlights the journey of Luiza Schneider Sampaio, an Applied Mathematics student at FGV EMAp, who found in the discipline a path to unite purpose, ethics, and technology.

The young woman began her journey motivated by an interest in finance and discovered that applied mathematics offers a way to solve real problems based on data and quantitative models.

“I realized I could use mathematics to create concrete impact, especially in the financial market,” she says.

During her undergraduate studies, Luiza participated in the Institutional Scientific Initiation Scholarship Program (PIBIC), conducting research in quantitative finance using models such as those of Bachelier and Black & Scholes, in addition to experiences offered by the Career Development and Internship Nucleus (NEDC).

For her, technology redefines the role of the quantitative professional. “Today, it is essential to master mathematics, statistics, and programming to handle artificial intelligence and machine learning,” she asserts.

Luiza's story reflects FGV EMAp's commitment to training professionals who combine analytical rigor, innovation, and purpose—transforming mathematics into a tool for the future.
