Research highlights the value of frank dialogue in corporate management
Study conducted by researchers from FGV EAESP proposes the “parrhesiastic pact” as a tool to transform power relations in organizations

In traditional organizational environments, candor is still viewed with apprehension. A study led by Renato Souza and Thomaz Wood Jr., from FGV EAESP, in collaboration with Brad Jackson, from Waikato Management School, suggests that creating a “pact of frank dialogue”—the so-called parrhesiastic pact—can boost more collaborative leadership.
Over 11 months, researchers followed the routine of a senior management team of a large Brazilian industrial company. The purpose of the study was to understand how encouraging honest positioning, even in the face of discomforts, can strengthen trust bonds and reshape the organizational hierarchy.
The pact stipulates that members must speak courageously and listen openly, especially those with less formal power. The practice proved challenging but essential for more ethical and participative decisions.
According to the authors, for shared leadership to be effective, more than distributing tasks is necessary; it’s crucial to create safe spaces for truth exercise.
