Study analyzes the impact of agribusiness leaders on sustainable development in the Amazon
Research identifies that managers with experience in the sector contribute to economic growth without increasing deforestation

A study published in the Academy of Management Discoveries analyzed the relationship between political activity, economic development, and environmental preservation in the Amazon. The research, conducted by Paulo Roberto Arvate and Joana Story from FGV EAESP, Gustavo Simões Cordeiro, and Leandro S. Pongeluppe, investigated whether mayors with professional training in agribusiness show different results in company creation and deforestation rates.
The analysis considered municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon from 2004 to 2016, using data obtained from nine official databases, including the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral, the Ministério do Trabalho, and DATASUS. The results indicate that mayors with agribusiness experience recorded greater local economic dynamism, with an increase in company creation, without a significant impact on deforestation advancement.
The study highlights that fiscal policies and public investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and urban planning were crucial for this balance. The conclusions reinforce that technical training and responsible management of municipal leaders can favor development models that reconcile economic growth and environmental conservation.
The research proposes a reflection on the role of these managers in the Amazonian context and emphasizes the importance of structured public policies to promote sustainable results.
