On 16 March 2023, the Workshop Transforming the Role of International Courts and Tribunals in a New Era of Adjudication will be held at the Fundação Getulio Vargas Rio de Janeiro Law School (Praia de Botafogo, 190). The workshop is organized by the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, coordinated by professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, with the support of the European Union Erasmus+ Programme.

International Courts and Tribunals (ICTs) are increasingly touching upon international and domestic politically-sensitive issues. Recent cases being heard before the International Court of Justice, including Gambia v. Myanmar and Ukraine v. Russia, also illustrate the growing tendency that international litigation has rarely been a matter of private concern or interest affecting exclusively the parties in dispute. The more the Court moves into new areas of global public concern, the more appropriate it is to provide for some method of participation in order to hear all relevant interests involved. Therefore, demands for greater legitimacy and transparency have been gaining momentum in recent years. It is up to International Courts and Tribunals, and to the World Court in particular, to find the balance between States’ rights and commonly aspired goals and its role of addressing the provision of common interests, without ignoring the geopolitical implications of their judgments.

The programme features internationally distinguished speakers from renowned higher education institutions. The keynote speech will be addressed by Laurence Boisson de Chazournes (University of Geneva), followed by the first panel on International Courts and Tribunals: Current Challenges, with the participation of Diego P. Fernández Arroyo (Sciences Po Law School), Jean-Marc Sorel (Sorbonne Law School, University of Paris 1), Serena Forlati (University of Ferrara) and Miriam Cohen (University of Montreal).

The second panel on the topic Working with Large Databases on International Courts will be chaired by Ely Caetano Xavier Junior (Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro) and will feature selected paper presentations, both in person and online, on projects concerning empirical legal methods and ICTs. The first presentation will be addressed by Seán Fobbe (Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich), with remarks by FGV professors and researchers: Raphael Tinarrage (FGV EMAp), Henrique Ennes (FGV EMAp), Lucas Thevenard Gomes (FGV Direito Rio) and José Luiz Nunes (FGV Direito Rio). The closing remarks on The Mixed Methods Turn in Studying Courts will be addressed by Malcolm Langford (University of Oslo).
