The Laboratory for Labor and Social Movement Studies (LEMT) of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will host the lecture “Favela workers’ union and the struggle against negotiated control of slums in Rio de Janeiro (1954-1964)” on March 30. The event will feature a lecture by historian Marco M. Pestana (UFF and CAP/INES) and comments by Samuel Oliveira (CPDOC and CEFET-RJ).

Pestana will analyze the creation, consolidation and downfall of the Favela Workers’ Union (União dos Trabalhadores Favelados – UTF), an organization created in 1954 with strong presence in Rio de Janeiro slums during the 1950’s and 1960’s. The lecture will focus on the articulation of this social movement among slum residents and other workers’ movements in Rio de Janeiro at that time.

The lecture stems from the researcher’s Master’s thesis, published in a book entitled “Favela Workers’ Union and the struggle against negotiated control of slums in Rio de Janeiro (1954-1964).”
