Paths for Social Security reform are discussed in Brasilia

The inner workings of social security within the top international economies were discussed.

Held by the Valor Econômico newspaper on April 17, in Brasilia, the event entitled ”Paths for Social Security Reform” promoted extensive debate on the issue. Featuring the Brazilian Minister of Treasury, Henrique Meirelles, the event gathered legislators, union representatives, experts and scholars, including Armando Castelar, researcher from the Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), and Kaizô Beltrão, professor at the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE).

Castelar was the event’s Keynote Speaker, presenting studies on Social Security from around the world. He talked about the inner workings of social security within the top international economies, and discussed how these countries developed and implemented reforms to keep up with economic and social changes.

Professor Kaizô was one of the panelists reviewing the weight of Social Security on public budgets, focusing on the comparison between these expenses and other budget obligations. The debate also featured economist and public account expert Raul Velloso, and the Secretary of Economic Monitoring of the Brazilian Treasury Department, Mansueto Almeida.
