Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) professor, Diego Werneck Arguelhes, was chosen by New York University (NYU) to join the Hauser Global Fellows. The program focuses on academic research and fellowships are granted across multiple categories to PhD candidates, post-doctorates, research fellows and senior research fellows.

As a Global Research Fellow, Arguelhes will work at the "Center for Law, Economics, and Organization" of NYU’s Law School, analyzing Brazil’s experience televising sessions of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to develop comparative and comprehensive analyses on democracy and the legitimacy of constitutional courts. The main goal is to identify under which general conditions it is beneficial for a democracy to present the court to society as a collective entity or as a group of individuals.

“It is interesting to consider these issues from a comparative standpoint, because, in the end, I believe there isn’t a single model to be followed, but rather different choices that bring out different expectations (and suspicions) regarding the courts,” he said.

By the end of the program, the fellows intend to publish an academic paper to spark debate within the community of researchers at NYU.
