FGV hosts event in New York with international investors, leaders and executives

Fundação Getulio Vargas and the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce (Brazilcham) hosted the sixth edition of World Economy and Brazil on May 15, at the Harvard Club in New York. The event gathered investors from Brazil and the U.S., as well as the leaders of some of the main international corporations, to discuss Brazil’s economy in the global scenario.

The event’s lecturers included the director of FGV Projetos, Cesar Cunha Campos, director of the Center for Global Economics (CEM) and former president of the Central Bank of Brazil, Carlos Geraldo Langoni, the Mayor of Sao Paulo, João Doria, and Brazil’s ambassador in the United States, Sergio Amaral

During his presentation, Cesar Cunha Campos pointed out that the country has taken a few key steps to resume economic growth, such as controlling inflation, cutting public spending, and implementing structural reforms. Carlos Geraldo Langoni also spoke about the importance of labor, social security and tax reforms to promote economic development, highlighting the attraction of investments as one of the ways to boost GDP growth.

The Mayor of São Paulo talked about Brazil’s political scenario, based on his administration of the city of São Paulo and the attempt to promote a program of privatizations and public-private partnerships to boost the city’s economy, among several other initiatives. Ambassador Sergio Amaral, in turn, addressed Brazil’s foreign policy amidst the current administration of U.S. President, Donald Trump. The seminar also featured FGV board member, Aldo Floris, and coordinator of GV Agro, Roberto Rodrigues.

In addition to support from Banco Bradesco, the VI World Economy and Brazil also received support from the Financial Times as its media partner, which published the “Reinventing Brazil” report drafted in partnership with FGV on May 16. The event took place during the Person of the Year 2017 week, held since 1970 by Brazilcham; this year’s edition honored Mayor João Doria and ambassador Thomas Shannon, Under Secretary for Political Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
