Study on educational segregation and income gap receives CNPq award

The work ‘A segregação racial e espacial no município de São Paulo: O impacto da segregação educacional no hiato de renda entre diferentes grupos raciais’ [Racial and spatial segregation in the municipality of São Paulo: The impact of educational segregation on the income gap between different racial groups] was awarded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CNPq) with the 14th Distinction in Scientific and Technological Initiation Award, under the Scientific Initiation Scholarship category, in the field of humanities and social sciences, letters, and arts. The study was conducted by FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP) undergraduate student Eliana Lins Morandi, advised by professor Gustavo Andrey de Almeida Lopes Fernandes.
The research aims to ascertain the existence of racial territorial segregation in the municipality of Sao Paulo and analyze its impact on income. The student investigated whether skin color and spatial segregation can explain the income gap in the municipality of Sao Paulo, and how important is the interference of education whether to enhance or reduce preexisting socioeconomic inequalities.
The study found that the income gap is related to a factor that precedes the job market: school segregation, which is notably related to the segregation of the private Primary School network. The research also shows that the inequality of access to education seems to manifest itself not through the public network, but the disproportionate composition of the private network, whose quality must be explored through other educational stages.
The complete study is available on the website, in Portuguese.
