Internet of Things research receives support from largest European technology think tank

FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) professor Eduardo Magrani was recently chosen as one of four researchers worldwide to join the Technology and Society Institute of Alexander Von Humboldt University (Germany), working directly with the Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things team as a Senior Fellow.
Humboldt is the largest and most important think tank in Europe researching these cutting-edge technological issues. Magrani will act as senior fellow for three months, with the purpose of completing the research on the Internet of Things, analyzing its impact from an ethics and privacy viewpoint.
The subject is still relatively latent in Brazil, despite the fast-paced development of technologies that make IoT a reality today, with countless interconnected devices, which creates an urgent need to discuss privacy, data protection, and security.
Nevertheless, the participation of society – and even literature specialized in technology – in the development of debate on the matter has been scarce. The National Internet of Things Plan, born from a partnership between the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communication (MCTIC) and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), has been in progress since late 2016, but still has very little engagement from the population.
Eduardo Magrani, a researcher from Rio de Janeiro Law School’s Center for Technology and Society (CTS), recently participated in a FGV Chat session addressing the impact of the IoT and the risks posed to privacy and security. Check out the video below, which is in Portuguese:
