Inflation among elderly in Brazil drops in the second quarter of 2017

The Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-3i), which measures consumer good variations in households composed primarily of individuals aged 60 or older, showed a variation of 0.50% in the second quarter of 2017. The CPI-3i was up 3.51% year over year. With this result, the indicator varied above the Consumer Price Index (CPI-BR), which was 3.44% for the same period.
Between the first and second quarters of 2017, the CPI-3i dropped 0.87 percentage point, falling from 1.38% to 0.50%. Five of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded decreases in their variations. The housing group was the main reason behind such trend, dropping from 2.02% to 0.40%. Within this expense category, the item driving this trend was household power bill, which recorded a -2.46% variation in the second quarter, compared to 5.76% in the previous quarter.
The following groups also contributed to the drop in the CPI-3i: food (1.12% to -0.94%), education, reading and recreation (2.95% to 0.08%), transportation (0.39% to -0.52%), and miscellaneous expenses (1.51% to 1.16%). For each of these classes, it is important to mention variations in the following items: fruit (1.97% to -19.22%), formal courses (9.19% to 0.00%), urban bus fare (4.48% to 0.83%), and cigarettes (1.72% to 0.00%), respectively.
On the other hand, the Health and Personal Care (1.74% to 2.70%), Communication (-1.07% to 0.75%), and Clothing (-0.19% to 1.18%) groups showed higher variation rates. The items that most contributed to such variations were general medication (0.13% to 3.43%), household phone bill (-3.75% to -0.22%) and clothing (-1.09% to 1.58%), respectively.
