International guest talks about digital humanities and Portuguese medical market

The Digital Humanities Lab (LHuD) of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will host the lecture titled ‘Digital Humanities in the analysis of movement patterns of the 16th century Portuguese medical market’, led by Professor Luís Ribeiro Gonçalves, from University of Évora, Portugal, on September 13, at 2 p.m. The event will be held at Casa Acervo CPDOC (Archive House), in Rio de Janeiro (Rua Jornalista Orlando Dantas, 60. Botafogo).

The guest will talk about the Portuguese expansion into new continents and how this process decisively contributed to a growing movement of new therapies and many practitioners. Meanwhile, other phenomena such as religious tensions against Jewish and Moorish communities in the Iberian kingdoms expanded the movement of healthcare professionals throughout Europe and into new continents.

The presentation will show how the use of prosopographic databases, geographic information systems (GIS), and other computational tools help to progressively identify the weight of these phenomena on the Portuguese medical market, combining the global and local scales, in order to analyze its medical training and practice venues.

Luís Ribeiro Gonçalves is a PhD candidate from the Inter-University Doctoral Program in History (PIUDHist) of University of Évora, with the project ‘Medical practice and professional control in 16th century Portugal.’
