Inflation climbs in five of seven Brazilian state capitals analyzed by FGV

The Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S) recorded a variation of -0.02% on September 30 – 0.05 percentage points (p.p.) above the rate recorded in the last report. With this result, the index accumulates a 2.31% increase in the year, and 3.17% over the last 12 months. Five of the seven state capitals surveyed recorded greater increases in prices. Salvador, Brasília, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo. Belo Horizonte, in turn, did not record any variation, and Porto Alegre was the only surveyed capital that showed a negative variation in the index.
Five of the index’s eight expense categories recorded a higher price variation. The Food group was the main contributing factor (-0.72% to -0.48%). In this expense category, it is important to mention the behavior of the herbs and vegetables item, which varied from -10.65% to -7.31%.
The following groups also recorded rate variations: Education, Reading and Recreation (0.29% to 0.50%), Clothing (0.26% to 0.64%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.12% to 0.35%) and Communication (-0.05% to -0.02%). Within these expense categories, it is important to highlight the following items: showrooms (-0.57% to -0.42%), clothing (0.34% to 0.93%), cigarettes (0.37% to 0.72%), and landline phone rate (-0.13% to -0.03%), respectively.
On the other hand, the Housing (-0.27% to -0.40%), Transportation (0.58% to 0.50%) and Health and Personal Care (0.30% to 0.27%) groups showed lower variation rates. The main drivers of the variation in these categories were household power rate (-2.03% to -3.31%), urban bus fare (-0.44% to -1.21%), and hygiene and personal care items (-0.19% to -0.52%), respectively.
