Brazil GDP Monitor indicates 0.2% growth

The FGV-GDP Monitor indicates a 0.2% increase in Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in August and 0.6% in the quarter ending in August, in comparison to the immediately previous quarter, according to the seasonally adjusted series. In both frequencies, the results point to the third consecutive increase in the indicator. The FGV-GDP Monitor is calculated by FGV's Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE).

“In August, the economy continued to grow not only due to good agricultural performance, but also to segments that, despite still remaining at very low levels, have started to show signs of improvement; this is the case of construction and the gross formation of fixed capital, which are fundamental to a more consistent recovery of the economy in the medium and long term,” says Claudio Considera, coordinator of the FGV-GDP Monitor.

In comparison with the same period last year, the GDP recorded a growth of 1.1% in the quarter that ended in August. Household consumption increased by 1.8% in the quarter that ended in August, compared to same quarter in 2016. In monetary terms, the GDP accrued until August 2017, in current values, reached approximately R$ 4,368,219,000,000.
