Executive assesses public health management in Brazil

If management of public hospitals does not improve, the Brazilian health system will fail. This prognosis comes from engineer Antonio José Rodrigues Pereira, superintendent of the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School (HCFMUSP). The professional is highlighted in the FGV Executive Magazine, by FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP), which dedicated its latest edition to mapping an analysis of health management in Brazil.

As superintendent since 2004, Antonio has defended breaking paradigms in the largest hospital complex in Latin America, through the efforts he and his colleagues make to integrate administration and medicine, using planning, events focused on the quality of the service provided, a new information system and partnerships with private companies.

With respect to healthcare in Brazil, Antonio believes that the major problem is the lack of technology, information and knowledge, which would facilitate more strategic decisions, especially in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). He states that knowing the needs of each hospital – from the number of gloves used to the demand for beds – is fundamental for the SUS to actually work in an integrated manner and for patients to be appropriately distributed.

“I think the SUS is perfect, but we need information and knowledge to make correct decisions. That’s what is missing”, he said.

In addition, Antonio spoke about his career; emphasized the importance of the public and private systems working hand-in-hand, interacting and forming partnerships with companies; and also about healthcare prospects in Brazil for the coming years.
