Social Security: event discusses longevity challenges for Brazil’s economy

Social security is one of the main challenges that Brazil will have to overcome in the next few years. To discuss the issue, FGV’s EPGE Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (EPGE) and the World Bank will bring together authorities and experts for the seminar titled ‘Social Security: Challenges of the New Demographic Regime’, on December 11. The event will be held in the auditorium of FGV’s main office in Rio de Janeiro (Praia de Botafogo, 190. Botafogo, 12th floor), from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature the study ‘Social Security: an unpayable bill,’ published by the World Bank. According to the publication, Brazil spends too much in social security benefits for international standards. This amount will increase drastically over the next few decades due to changes in Brazil’s demographic structure.

The event will be attended by Antonio Nucifora, Lead Country Economist for Brazil at the World Bank; Asta Zviniene, Senior Specialist in Social Protection; Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, President of FGV; Fabio Giambiagi, Economist from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES); Heinz Rudolph, Lead Economist for the Financial Industry at the World Bank; Henrique Meirelles, Minister of Finance; João Borges, Journalist from GloboNews; José Feres, EPGE Professor; Luis Henrique Paiva, Governmental Manager at IPEA and Professor at IDP/Brasília; Marcelo Caetano, Secretary of Social Security; Martin Raiser, Director of the World Bank for Brazil; and Rubens Penha Cysne, Dean of FGV’s EPGE.
