Brazil IGP-M accelerates in the first preliminary results for December

Calculated by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), the General Market Price Index (IGP-M) recorded a 0.73% variation in the first ten days of December. The index varied -0.02% month over month. The IGP-M for the first ten days of December considered the period between November 21 and 30.
The Broad Producer Price Index (IPA) recorded a 0.96% increase in the ten-day period in December. The index varied -0.09% in the same period in November. In the Finished Goods category, the index rose from 0.19% to 0.47%, led by the processed foods subgroup, which rose from 0.31% to 1.08%. Intermediate Goods showed a 1.47% increase, compared to 1.70% in the previous month. The supplies subgroup was the main factor behind such decrease, dropping from 2.88% to 0.89%.
The Gross Raw Materials index varied by 0.96%. The index varied -2.62% in the previous month. The upward trend was led by iron ore (-14.95% to 1.99%), fresh milk (-8.21% to -0.89%) and cattle (-1.67% to 1.47%). In the opposite direction, the main highlights were soy (beans) (2.72% to 0.70%), corn (grains) (3.71% to 1.34%) and poultry (3.50% to 1.05%).
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) finished the first 10-day period of December with a 0.30% variation, against 0.03% in the previous month. Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded higher price changes, particularly the Transportation group (0.11% to 0.78%). Within this expense category, it is important to highlight the behavior of the gasoline item, which rose from 0.51% to 2.97%.
The following groups also showed higher price variation rates: Education, Reading and Recreation (-0.59% to 0.54%), Clothing (-0.35% to 0.96%), Food (-0.28% to -0.17%), Housing (0.29% to 0.37%), and Miscellaneous Expenses (-0.01% to 0.06%). In these expense classes, the highlights were airfare (-12.92% to 20.39%), clothing (-0.30% to 1.12%), dairy products (-1.64% to 0.36%), household water and sewage rate (0.00% to 1.48%), and pet food (-1.23% to 0.19%), respectively.
On the other hand, the following groups also showed lower price variation rates: Health & Personal Care (0.52% to 0.32%) and Communication (0.20% to -0.21%). Within these expense classes, the highlights were perfume (1.67% to -0.82%) and household phone rate (0.00% to -2.10%), respectively.
The Civil Construction Index (INCC) varied 0.30% in the first ten days of December. This index varied 0.29% in the previous month. The index regarding Materials, Equipment and Services varied 0.54%, compared to 0.64% in the previous month. The Labor cost index varied 0.10%. This index did not show any variation in the previous month.
