New book by Roberto Mangabeira Unger discusses critical Law studies in modern society

One of the main personalities in Brazilian academia, philosopher and social theorist Roberto Mangabeira Unger takes a closer look at Law studies in his latest publication. FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) has recently launched the book ‘O movimento de estudos críticos do Direito: outro tempo, tarefa maior’ [The critical Law studies movement: different times, greater task], in partnership with Letramento.
The book seeks to answer a question that pervades academia. Is legal thinking a means to recover the imagination of institutional alternatives, which has dried up in contemporary culture and politics? The critical legal studies movement was the most important chain of progressive ideas in Law in the last 70 years. Its greatest theorist is precisely the author of this book: Brazil’s own, Roberto Mangabeira Unger.
The book was written as a manifesto of the movement and added with new text addressing how to think about the law and the institutions from now on.
