Retrospective 2017 > FGV’s Sao Paulo Law School (Direito SP) and the National Citizen Office for Citizenship of the Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights published the directive titled “Implementing the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: the duty to protect the State and the responsibility of companies to uphold human rights”.

Devised in partnership with Direito SP’s Human Rights and Business Research Group (GDHeE), the guidelines have technical and scientific subsidies on the subject, seeking to broaden debate on this topic across the country. The material includes the “UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights”, the paradigms of governments and companies when implementing such principles, the government’s duty to uphold Human Rights and the companies’ duty to preserve such rights, as well as other related subjects, such as the UN Report of the Working Group.

The directive lists three primary goals. The first is to clarify changes promoted by the Guiding Principles (GPs) and effects on the duty of governments to uphold human rights and, as a result, the duty of companies in abiding by such rights. The second goal is to list examples of topics to be addressed in Brazilian politics to implement the GPs. The last goal is to suggest the next steps to implement the GPs in Brazil.
