Inflation for low-income families in Brazil retreats

The Consumer Price Index - Class 1 (CPI-C1) for December, published by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), recorded a variation of -0.03%, which is 0.24 percentage points below the rate for November, when the index recorded a variation of 0.21%. With this result, the indicator accrued an increase of 2.07% in 2017. In December, the CPI-BR recorded a variation of 0.21%. The indicator’s rate in the year was 3.23%, above the rate recorded by CPI-C1.
Four out of the eight expense categories comprising the index recorded decreasing variation rates: Housing (0.92% to -0.58%), Transport (0.58% to 0.29%), Education, Reading, and Recreation (0.53% to 0.32%), and Health and Personal Care (0.23% to 0.22%). In these groups, the highlights were household power bill (3.84% to -3.89%), urban bus fare (0.21% to -0.59%), performance venues (1.03% to 0.73%), and medications in general (0.09% to -0.06%), respectively.
On the other hand, the Food (-0.47% to 0.13%), Clothing (-0.17% to 0.33%), and Communication (-0.42% to -0.37%) groups showed increased variation rates. Within these expense classes, the highlights were the following items: poultry and eggs (-1.88% to 0.21%), clothing (-0.33% to 0.59%), and household phone bill (-1.75% to -1.03%), respectively.
The Miscellaneous Expenses group repeated the 0.13% variation rate recorded in the last poll. The main increasing and decreasing influences were the following items: pet food (-0.44% to 1.20%) and phone card (0.86% to 0.00%), respectively.
The next CPI-C1 will be released on February 7.
