Brazil General Price Index drops in January

The General Price Index – 10 (IGP-10), calculated by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), varied 0.79% in January. A rate of 0.90% was disclosed in December. The index varied by 0.88% in January 2017. The 12-month accumulated IGP-10 rate is -0.51%. IGP-10 is calculated based on prices collected between the 11th day of the previous month and the 10th of the reference month.
The Broad Producer Price Index (IPA) varied 1.06% in January, compared to a variation of 1.22% recorded in December. The Final Goods category varied 0.74% in January, compared to 0.52% in December. The main reason behind such variation was the fresh foods subgroup, which shifted from -2.57% to 2.30%. The Final Goods (ex) category, calculated without the fresh foods and fuels subgroups for consumption, recorded a variation of 0.38%, compared to 0.28% in the previous month.
The index for Intermediate Goods varied 0.68%. The rate was 1.69% in the previous month. The main reason for this decrease was the fuel and lubricants for production subgroup, in which the variation shifted from 4.59% to 0.24%. The Intermediate goods (ex) rate, obtained after excluding fuel and lubricants for production from the subgroup, varied 0.75%. In the previous month, this rate increased 1.23%.
The Gross Raw Materials category varied by 1.95%. This rate in December was 1.56%. The following items contributed to the group’s acceleration: iron ore (2.96% to 8.53%), sugar cane (-0.44% to 0.60%) and cattle (1.47% to 2.59%). In the opposite direction, the following items stand out: soybeans (2.18% to 0.53%), swine (3.46% to -6.65%) and coffee beans (0.59% to -1.54%).
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) varied 0.36% in January, compared to 0.29% in December. Five of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded higher price variations, particularly the Food group (-0.16% to 0.66%). In this expense category, it is important to mention the behavior of the herbs and vegetables item, which varied from -3.90% to 5.78%.
The following groups also showed higher price variation rates: Transport (0.68% to 0.85%), Communication (-0.22% to 0.20%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.13% to 0.19%) and Health & Personal Care (0.36% to 0.41%). It is important to note the behavior of the following items in these expense categories: urban bus fare (-1.53% to 0.59%), household phone bill (-2.87% to 0.01%), pet food (0.14% to 2.50%) and skin protection (-2.95% to -1.10%), respectively.
On the other hand, the following groups also showed lower price variation rates: Housing (0.38% to -0.23%), Clothing items (0.44% to -0.27%) and Education, Reading, and Recreation (0.74% to 0.65%). The behavior of the following items is worth mentioning for these expense categories: household power bill (1.16% to -2.46%), clothing (0.38% to -0.50%) and airfare (13.54% to -6.30%), respectively.
The Civil Construction Index (INCC) recorded variation of 0.08% in January, compared to 0.30% in the previous month. The index regarding Materials, Equipment and Services varied 0.16%, compared to 0.56% in the previous month. The Manpower cost index varied by 0.02%. In the previous month, this rate varied 0.08%.
