Brazil Consumer Price Index records higher inflation in first week of April

Calculated by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), the Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S) on April 7 varied 0.31% – 0.14 percentage point (p.p.) above the last published rate.

Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price variation. The Food group was the main contributing factor (-0.02% to 0.29%). Within this expense category, it is important to highlight the behavior of the fruit item, which rose from 5.80% to 7.93%.

The following groups also recorded rate variations: Health and Personal Care (0.42% to 0.61%), Education, Reading and Recreation (-0.09% to 0.06%), Housing (0.27% to 0.32%), Transport (0.23% to 0.28%), and Communication (-0.09% to 0.04%). In these expense classes, it is also important to highlight the behavior of the following items: general medication (0.00% to 0.24%), air ticket (-8.82% to -6.08%), household power bill (1.19% to 1.57%), gasoline (-0.27% to -0.05%), and fixed telephone and internet packages (0.52% to 0.71%), respectively. 

On the other hand, the Clothing (0.57% to 0.47%), and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.05% to 0.02%) groups showed lower variation rates. The following items stood out in these expense classes: clothing (0.82% to 0.71%) and pet food (-0.15% to -0.58%), respectively. 

The next calculation of the Weekly Consumer Price Index, with data collected until April 15, will be disclosed on April 16.
