Brazil consumer price inflation advances in second week of April

Calculated by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), the Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S) varied 0.35% on April 15 – 0.04 percentage point (p.p.) above the last published rate.
Four of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price variation. The Housing group recorded the highest variation (0.32% to 0.44%). In this expense class, it is important to highlight the behavior of the household power bill item, whose rate went from 1.57% to 1.78%.
The following groups also recorded rate variations: Health and Personal Care (0.61% to 0.73%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.06% to 0.13%), and Communication (0.04% to 0.05%). Within these expense categories, it is important to highlight the following items: medications in general (0.24% to 0.91%), showrooms (1.03% to 1.63%), and mobile phone rate (0.13% to 0.29%), respectively.
On the other hand, the Transport (0.28% to 0.26%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.02% to -0.03%), Clothing (0.47% to 0.44%), and Food (0.29% to 0.28%) groups recorded drops in prices. The following items were the main drivers of such variation within these classes: urban bus fare (0.72% to 0.37%), pet food (-0.58% to -1.06%), women’s clothing (1.18% to 0.82%), and fruit (7.93% to 6.97%), respectively.
The next calculation of the Weekly Consumer Price Index, with data collected until April 22, will be disclosed on April 23.
