This Thursday, April 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sao Paulo Law School (FGV Direito SP) will host a debate on the collective Habeas Corpus (HC) No. 143.641/SP, filed by the Human Rights Lawyers Collective (CADHu) and the Federal Public Defender, in favor of pregnant women and mothers of underage children. The HC was granted by the second chamber of the Federal Supreme Court on February 20, 2018. The meeting will take place at Direito SP’s main office (Rua Rocha, 233. Bela Vista, Sao Paulo/SP).

According to the decision, the country’s entire court system will have 60 days to release all women in these conditions, as was the case of Adriana Ancelmo, wife of the former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral.

Direito SP professor Maíra Cardoso Zapater will give the opening lecture, drawing a parallel with the criminal enforcement discipline taught by her this semester, and a lecture by professor Eloísa Machado, who is part of CADHu and participated in the drafting and filing of the habeas corpus, as well as Bruna Soares Angotti, Hilem Estefânia Cosme de Oliveira, and André Ferreira.

Among other issues, the meeting will discuss procedural innovations stemming from the HC, the research process and how it was used to support the HC, the role of civil society organizations and collectives in that decision, and the role of custody hearings, among other related topics.
