Inflation for low-income families in Brazil varies 0.31% in April

The Consumer Price Index - Class 1 (CPI-C1) of April, published by the Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE), recorded a variation of 0.31%, 0.23 percentage point (p.p.) higher than in March, when the index varied 0.08%. With this result, the index accumulates a 0.88% increase in the year, and 1.65% over the last 12 months. In April, the CPI-BR recorded a variation of 0.34%. The indicator for the last 12 months stood at 2.98%, above the level recorded by CPI-C1.
Five out of the eight expense categories comprising the index recorded increasing variation rates: Food (-0.27% to 0.25%), Health and Personal Care (0.30% to 1.32%), Education, Reading, and Recreation (0.00% to 0.15%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.03% to 0.29%), and Communication (-0.25% to -0.18%). In these groups, the highlights were the following items: vegetables (-0.88% to 4.28%), medications in general (0.04% to 2.28%), showrooms (0.49% to 1.59%), veterinary clinic (0.85% to 3.66%), and monthly cable TV subscription (0.27% to 1.36%), respectively.
On the other hand, the Transport (0.38% to -0.16%) and Clothing (0.43% to 0.32%) groups recorded lower price variations. The following items were the highlights in these expense classes: urban bus fare (0.66% to -0.32%) and women’s clothing (1.14% to 0.80%), respectively.
The Housing group recorded the same price variation of 0.23% as in the last assessment. The main upward and downward drivers were bottled gas (-0.11% to 0.84%) and household power bill (1.01% to 0.48%), respectively.
