Journalists, civil society groups and government officials gathered on September 20 and 21, at FGV’s Sao Paulo Law School (Direito SP), for training on open source tools, methodologies and strategies to combat misinformation in the 2018 elections. The workshop is part of the project Digital Democracy Room #observa2018, led by FGV’s Public Policy Analysis Division (DAPP), and of #ElectionWatch Latin America, of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center and the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

In the event, researchers from the Atlantic Council, DAPP and the Technology and Equity Institute addressed topics such as the impact of social media on the results of an election, how to determine the source of a viral hashtag, how to reverse check images, and how to use the most advanced URL searches on Facebook and Twitter, in addition to understanding how to use this information in press coverage, along with other topics.

From the Digital Democracy Room, DAPP has analyzed and exposed the scope of disinformation cases, the presence of bots and movement on social media around the 2018 elections. The project relies on a partnership with several institutions, including the Atlantic Council and the Technology and Equity Institute.
