Brazil’s General Price Index increases to 1.43% in October

The General Price Index – 10 (IGP-10) varied 1.43% in October, a higher percentage than the 1.20% increase recorded in September. With this result, the index accrues a 9.44% high in the year and 10.69% year-over-year. In October 2017, the index recorded a 0.49% increase and had accrued a drop of 1.29% in 12 months.

The Broad Producer Price Index (IPA) rose from 1.76% in September to 1.92% in October. In the analysis based on processing stages, the prices of Final Goods rose 1.52% in October, on average, after rising 0.34% in September. The processed foods subgroup was the main driver behind this trend, varying from -0.62% to 1.45% The Final Goods category, which excludes the fresh foods and fuels subgroups for consumption, rose 1.02% in October, compared to 0.20% in the previous month.

The Intermediate Goods group rose from 1.63% in September to 2.53% in October. The Fuels and Lubricants subgroup was the main reason for such increase, rising from 2.60% to 7.78%. The Intermediate Goods (ex) rate, excluding the fuel and lubricants subgroup for production, rose 1.60% in October, compared to 1.46% in the previous month.

The Gross Raw Materials group rose 1.65% in October, after a 3.64% increase in September. Some of the main drivers behind such decrease in the group were iron ore (10.15% to 3.14%), corn (grains) (8.43% to -2.42%), and fresh milk (4.27% to -2.58%). On the upside, the most relevant variations occurred in poultry (-0.03% to 4.10%), sugar cane (-1.03% to 0.51%) and cattle (1.35% to 2.81%).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) varied 0.52% in October, compared to 0.08% in September. Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded higher price changes, particularly the Transportation group (-0.28% to 1.43%). It is worth mentioning the behavior of gasoline in this expense category, which rose 4.68% in October, after falling 0.52% in September.

The Food (0.01% to 0.47%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.26% to 0.70%), Health and Personal Care (0.26% to 0.40%), Clothing (-0.12% to 0.22%) and Communication (-0.12% to 0.16%) groups also recorded increasing variation rates. The following items were the main drivers behind such changes: herbs and vegetables (-5.98% to 1.87%), show venues (-3.92% to 2.12%), hygiene and personal care items (-0.37% to 0.47%), clothes (-0.08% to 0.42%) and mobile phone bill (-0.62% to -0.01%).

On the other hand, the Housing (0.24% to 0.12%) and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.65% to 0.09%) groups yielded lower rates. The top contributors in these expense categories were residential water and sewage bill (1.08% to 0.00%) and cigarettes (1.65% to -0.08%).

The Civil Construction Index (INCC) rose 0.31% in October, compared to 0.16% in September. The index regarding Materials, Equipment and Services varied 0.52%, compared to 0.36% in the previous month. The Manpower cost category recorded an increase of 0.12% in October. The index did not vary in the previous month.
