Meeting discusses role of historians based on work about correspondence between Getúlio and Alzira Vargas

On October 19, at 3 p.m., the Laboratory for Visual Culture Studies (LECV) of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will hold a debate on the book Volta ao Poder – A correspondência entre Getulio Vargas e a filha Alzira (1946-1950)” [Return to Power – correspondence between Getulio Vargas and his daughter Alzira (1946-1950)]. The event will be attended by CPDOC researchers and book organizers Adelina Novaes e Cruz and Regina da Luz Moreira, who will talk about their production process and the Vargas archive, as well as the choice of the letters and photographs that make up the publication and the research.

The illustrated book contains 232 images and joins all of the 568 letters exchanged between the former President and Alzira Vargas do Amaral Peixoto from January 1946 to December 1950. In each line, the text reveals the mental acuity of both, as well as the deep affection that bonded them. In this meeting, the organizers will talk about the production process for the book, composed of dozens of historical documents.

The debate also aims to appreciate the work of historians and archivists, and will screen home movies made by the Vargas family, images virtually unknown to the public. The screening will take place under the context of Home Movie Day, an annual worldwide event that celebrates the importance of amateur cinema and images produced by non-professional videographers. The event held in October around the world aims to appreciate these images as fundamental cultural documents and call attention to the need to preserve them.
