International Workshop discusses Private Equity

On October 9, FGV’s Center for Startup, Innovation, Venture Capital and Private Equity Studies (FGVnest) welcomed London Business School professors Eli Talmor and Florin Vasvari in Sao Paulo. For the first time in Latin America, the authors of a book on International Private Equity taught the workshop “International Private Equity & Debt Master Class” for several professionals and scholars.
“FGVnest’s support to this international workshop at Fundação Getulio Vargas is in line with the Center’s goal of being a ‘hub’ for cutting-edge knowledge, promoting, encouraging and aggregating relevant initiatives for the Venture Capital and Private Equity industry in the country”, said FGVnest’s Coordinator, professor Caio Ramalho.
Held by HMC Itajubá, a Latin American leader in financial and investment advisory services with a focus on alternative assets, and sponsored by the international managers Bridgewater Associates and Pearl Diver Capital, the workshop addressed four central themes: “Constructing an alternative portfolio”, “Overview of the Private Equity market and Fund Economics”, “Private Debt Funds”, and “Introduction to Collateralized loan obligations (CLOs)”. The event was attended by several representatives of family offices, pension funds, wealth managers and others interested in the asset class.
“HMC Itajubá had already held similar initiatives at the Wharton University campus, Harvard Business School and, on occasion, at the London Business School. After some initiatives abroad, they came up with the idea of bringing professors to Brazil, thus broadening the impact and the audience of this type of initiative. Hosting this workshop at FGV, in partnership with FGVNest, was something that left us quite honored, and crucial to the success of the event. Professors Talmor and Vasvari coming to Brazil is an example of our commitment to cutting-edge thinking in finance and investments, especially in the segment of alternative assets”, said HMC Itajubá Partner Agnaldo Andrade.
Leonardo Camozzato, also a Partner at HMC Itajubá, celebrated the opportunity to be close to academia and thus offer the most modern discussions on investments and new businesses to investors in Latin America. He exemplified the issue of CLOs, which are still very little known to Brazilian investors, although they are a form of investment whose market is worth more than USD 800 billion.
In addition to teaching the workshop on October 9, professors Talmor and Vasvari were welcomed by professor Claudio V. Furtado (FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP)) on October 8 for a meeting with some professors from FGV to discuss the international Private Equity market. The meeting included professors Antônio Gledson de Carvalho (EAESP), Antônio Zoratto Sanvicente (FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Economics (EESP)), Caio Ramalho (FGVnest), Edilene Santos (EAESP), Lauro Gonzalez (EAESP), Oscar Malvessi (EAESP) and Rafael Schiozer (EAESP), in addition to some guests.
