Seminar gathers experts to discuss legislative reforms in criminal matters

With the aim of discussing proposals for changes in the criminal legislation in the current context of the criminal justice system, as well as directions of the criminal policy in Brazil, FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (DIREITO RIO) will be holding, on March 20, from 2 pm to 8 pm, the seminar “Reformas legislativas em matéria penal” (“Legislative Reforms in Criminal Matters”) at the auditorium of FGV Headquarters (Praia do Botafogo, 190 – 12º andar, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, RJ). The event also marks the launch of the book “Por que o legislador quer aumentar penas? Populismo penal legislativo na câmara dos deputados: análise das justificativas das proposições legislativas no período de 2006 a 2014” (“Why Do Legislators Want to Increase Penalties? Legislative Criminal Populism in the Chamber of Deputies: Analysis of Justifications of Legislative Proposals in the Period 2006-2014”).
The seminar will feature the participation of authorities and experts in Criminal Law, such as Rogerio Schietti Cruz (Minister of the Superior Court of Justice), Ricardo Andrade Saadi (Federal Police Superintendent in Rio de Janeiro), Eleonora Rangel Nacif (President of the Brazilian Institute for Criminal Science – IBCCRIM), Lívia Casseres (Public Defender of Rio de Janeiro), and Leonardo Cardoso de Freitas (Regional Prosecutor of the Republic – MPF/RJ). DIREITO RIO´s professors André Mendes, Michael Mohallem and Thiago Bottino will also participate in the seminar.
The book, which should be launched on 6:30 pm on the same date, is authored by Professor André Mendes – organizer of the event – who serves as researcher and coordinator at DIREITO RIO’s Nucleus for Legal Practice. The work unveils the numerical and non-numerical evidence, which demonstrate the phenomenon of punitive populism within the scope of the legislative activity of the Chamber of Deputies, from 2006 to 2014 in Brazil.
