FGV’s Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) participated in the international seminar Fake News e Eleições (“Fake News and Elections”), on May 17, an event organized by the Superior Electoral Court in Brasília. The seminar aimed to think of ways to minimize the dissemination and promotion of false content in the upcoming municipal elections of 2020.

FGV DAPP participated in the panel “Ferramentas de Enfrentamento às Fake News” (“Tools for Combating Fake News”). Researcher Danilo Carvalho presented the experiences gained in last year’s presidential elections, with the Digital Democracy Room – #observa2018 on the performance of automated profiles (bots) and the dissemination of fake content on different digital platforms. In addition to presenting pre-electoral data that influenced the political debate since 2014, Carvalho showed cases of misinformation analyzed by FGV DAPP.

During 2018, the Advisory Council on the Internet and Elections, set up by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), of which FGV DAPP was a member, discussed the influence of the Internet on the elections, particularly on the risk of fake news and the use of bots in the dissemination of information, actions that contributed to the expansion of the knowledge of the Electoral Justice on the subject.
